Highcourt ban e-Rickshaw in delhi

Delhi High Court on Thursday put a ban on e-rickshaws in Delhi with immediate effect. Those against e-rickshaws say these 'vehicles' do not require registration and that their drivers also do not need licences, as this mode of transport is not covered under the Motor Vehicles Act. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had recently announced that the government would not ban e-rickshaws in Delhi. He, however, himself got embroiled in controversy later when reports claimed that a firm allegedly linked to the minister was seeking to manufacture e-rickshaws.
Raising serious concern over the accidents, the traffic police, in an affidavit, also said unregulated operation of the battery-operated vehicles tends to cause traffic problems and are causing nuisance on the roads. It said that till June, 137 cases were registered against e-rickshaw drivers for rash and negligent driving. E-rickshaws have been involved in 29 accidents. Two people died in two cases, while 29 others were injured in the remaining instances, said the affidavit.
